3D CHARACTER ANIMATION
(Blender, TVPaint)
Can you suggest a whole story from just an audio monologue and character acting? This was exactly what this animation was about! With audio extracted from "Marriage story", I did my best to tell a believable story with a clear genre, a road movie, while also creating character animation that has subtext.
I started this project by doing research into the tropes of my genre and chose the narrative type of “The Quest” instead of “The Outlaw Case” to match the mood of the monologue. I created a 3D background based on the continental US and incorporated R&D music provided by the radio stereo as it is often the case in road movies. These actions were essential to set up the disposition in my animation and to have clear storytelling. Acting out the monologue was key to creating a comprehensive performance. It helped ease the animation process, which was a difficult one, as the 3D medium was new to me. Feedback was essential in creating the right types of shots that deliver emotion: a low angle to make the main character seem dominant, an aerial shot to produce an ending linked to my genre etc. Learning about subtext was fascinating and its usage became vital to deliver compelling movement.
VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

Below, you can see the draft animatic I developed. It is based of off tens of reference videos I took of myself acting out the audio.
